If your child has difficulty reading, don’t give up and don’t give in when they don’t want to try. Reading is the foundation for all other learning, so you can’t let this one slide.
If reading at school is not providing all the practice they need, get your child more books that they will enjoy reading at home. Have a lot of them so there will be variety. Find a lot of cheap children’s books and make it fun. Do the reading together so you can keep tabs on the progress that is made.
Don’t make your child read a lot at one sitting, if they are not enjoying it. Sometimes that makes it even worse. Have them read for just a few minutes. Or have them read one paragraph, or one page – whatever they can handle without becoming discouraged. Then have them do it often. Give a lot of breaks between reading periods.
Praise them liberally to encourage their progress. And keep with it. Not being able to read well will be a hindrance to the whole rest of their lives. So keep it up until they have the problem mastered.
